Why do I need a guide to catch fish?
Other than the amazing adventure of chasing once in a lifetime fish, what do I really get out of a guided trip?
I have been guiding fly fishing off and on for around 15 years. I have done it in Arkansas, Florida, the Carolinas, and now Wisconsin. Over the years I have begun to want to teach people to fish much more than I want to take someone to a spot, catch as many as possible, then move to another spot and do it again. So nowadays that’s how I do it, for the most part.

The Run
Record Chasing
During late fall and winter most of my time is spent chasing the biggest browns in the world. The timing of the run is heavily dependent on water flows and temperatures. These things can result in cancellations, or potentially needing to move dates and times.
However, every minute spent on the water looking for Brown Trout in this area during this time of year may result in a catch of a lifetime. This sort of trip is not for beginners, its not for the faint of heart.
The conditions are harsh, you have to work hard, this is trophy fishing. I am not interested in taking just anyone on these trips for multiple reasons. You really have to want to catch a monster, and you have to understand that it may not happen. Please check in with me directly if this is something you are interested in doing.
Learning To Fish the Run
I do offer fishing lessons during the fall and spring run. This is a more laidback trip. The lessons are more about learning what to use, when to use it, and where you have your best chance to catch fish during the fall and spring run.
We will go through rigging and fishing techniques for indicator fishing and for streamer fishing for Coho Salmon and Brown Trout in the fall, and Steelhead in the spring.
We will look at the water charts, temperatures, and read the behaviors of fish in certain locations to understand what is going on in the moment, and what we should be doing as a result.
During the Run, we get to the water before sunrise and will only fish during the week. The earlier you book for this the better. My time gets taken up pretty quickly during this time of year, and the weather and water conditions have a tendency to move things around a lot.
Inland Trout
During the spring months, until the water starts to get too hot, I offer guided fly-fishing trips in the Wisconsin Driftless, and the Madison area. These trips revolve around learning to fly fish for trout. Depending on which bugs are doing what, we can dry fly fish, euronymph, use indicators, or streamers.
Again, these trips aren’t just about going out and catching as many fish as possible, but more about going out and learning to read the water, fish different techniques, and hopefully to teach you enough that you never need a driftless guide again. If you have a preferred method of fly fishing that you would like to try or get better at, then let me know. I can set something up that works just for you.
Dog Days of Summer
July – Most of August is carp time. I like to mix it up between carp, freshwater drum, and small mouth in rivers. This time of year is a good time to target the GOLDEN BONES of the Midwest. This is also a learning trip. Start off with some casting analysis, and some drills for you to do on your own. We will go over the different methods and gear that I use for various warm water species, then we will go sight fishing for feeding carp.
When the opportunity presents itself, we will also take shots at other warm water species. Anything from Pike to blue gill is on the table during this time of year. Most of the fishing that we will be doing will be walking and wet wading. These trips are very valuable for people that want to fish saltwater. If you are ever going to go and fish the flats for bonefish, then you need to spend some time practicing with carp.
